It's the troops, stupid.

The Clarion received this link about the new vehicle, the MRAP, that is replacing the Humvee. Sounds like a no-brainer. The troops in the line of fire need’em desperately. The possibility to counteract the remote contolled bombs that cause up to 70% of United States casualties must be acted upon immediately. Even if withdrawal is imminent.

There is an even stronger moral imperative to get the post war medical care and treatment system right. Newsweek’s insightful investigations of post war care at Walter Reed Hospital among a host of problems caused heads to roll, but did it do any good? Time will tell, but America shouldn’t fail to rise to this challenge for lack of expenditure or red tape.

The savings realized in the medium term budget gained by imminent withdrawal could finance these costs. Or they could be financed by the repeal of portions of the Bush tax cut; starting with, for instance, income tax rates for the top 2%-3% of earners or the estate tax for estates valued at $10 million or more.

(A shudder considering the McCain vibe around the office...quite a long way from 2000 when the nascent Clarion was intrigued by the "Straight Talk Express")

In Washington hearings continue into the bureaucratically uninspired, uncaring, lackadaisical treatment of wounded Iraq veterans. Reports highlight a concern the Clarion has warned of in the past, inadequate treatment of post-traumatic stress from War. The military's screening test for post-traumatic stress consists of only four questions. Their follow-up is piss-poor. These men and women, these soldiers are giving literally their life and limb for America.

How can they get this kind of treatment?

It unfortunately is sadly parallel to the way the Bush-Cheney administration has callously expended their lives in a War of choice.

Likewise has been Bush-Cheney's utterly indifferent treatment of the wounded who have returned home. Wounds physical and psychological have under-treated. The administration has incentivized the military to fight returning veterans efforts to get paid disability.

Remember this administration fought tooth and nail against honoring America's veterans killed-in-action by allowing their flag covered caskets to be shown by the media. This censoring, presidential power-hoarding regime in clear violation of the First Amendment refused these soldiers and the nation the final dignity of recognizing their ultimate sacrifice.
