Follow up to Baseball Predictions

Follow up to Baseball Predictions (Detroit Tigers)

Much as I respect Jim Leyland as a manager, I still don’t believe that the Tigers will see the post-season, except on TV. I know if Detroit can play .500 baseball from here on out, they will win 90 games. (Note: which would not have gotten them in last year.) They’ve thrown nine shutouts already, and everybody is raving about their pitchers. Nine shutouts at this point is like shooting 80% from the 3-point line, you just don’t do it for a full season. Mike Maroth is a well under .500 career pitcher (45 up and 60 down.) Kenny Rogers always gets smaller as the games get bigger. He’s had many a hot start in his career only to wilt in July and August, and has always had his best seasons for non-contenders. see Kenny Rogers stats While this kid Verlander, looks unbelievable, and I must admit I knew nothing about him when the season started, he is a rookie. Closer Todd Jones is 38. So no Detroiters don’t give up on the Pistons, they’re only down 1-0, and don’t start reserving your Tigers playoff tickets just yet.

More on the Tigers, the paper tigers of Detroit that is…

Tigers after two games of the Yankees series are now 3 up and 6 down against teams with winning records, but 8 and 0 against the Royals. Thanks to the New York Post sports for that stat The Tigers would be hard pressed to finish fourth, ahead of the Orioles, in the AL East this year, and would have zero chance of catching the Blue Jays or Red Sox for 3rd place. The Tigers will barely break .500 at the end of the season, even playing the Royals and Twins nineteen times a piece.

The Tigers lead the American League in striking out, not a good sign for a young team. But Detroiters console yourself, with at least they are a young team, comparisons to last year’s Baltimore Orioles are a little unfair. Although Tod Jones, their closer, is a junk balling lefty in a righty’s body, and is eligible for Social Security.

Noticed in the first two games of the Yankees series in Detroit how many Yankees fans are in the crowd…I guess that happens when you’ve sucked for twenty years…sorry nineteen years; no playoff teams since 1987, no winning seasons since 1993. (Want an idea how long ago 1993 was: it was the second year of Bill Clinton’s first term, George Bush the II was still known as a baseball owner, not a governor, and gas was $1 and change a gallon.) Link to Tiger’s recent season records Hey Detroit, it could be worse, in Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ crowds the Yankees far outnumber the home team’s fans. It didn’t look like that was the case in Detroit, just a substantial contingent of Yankee fans on hand.

Clear just how young and not quite ready for prime time the Tigers were and are last night, as they let Mo Rivera mop’em up so quickly that he lasted for three innings for the first time in almost ten years.

Did the Content say something about the Braves being in the World Series? How's that for a prediction?
